Weekly News December 17 – 23, 2017

Announcements

Longest Night Service: On December 21, we will hold a “Longest Night/Christmas Mourning” service on the longest night of the year. There will be a potluck meal starting at 6:45pm, and a vesper’s service at 7:30pm. Christmas can be a dark time when grief is more profound, loss seems keenly more painful, and overwhelming sadness that seems out of place in the tinsel and light threatens to swallow us up. During the season of Advent, we acknowledge a longing for what is to come – we recognize the wait and the pain involved in the “not yet.”

Congregational Meeting: On December 10 we affirmed all five of Council’s proposed nominees for Council 2018 and approved the budget which council proposed. Vi Diamond and Gary Mulder will join council as elders and Todd Helmus and Chelsea Thomas will join as deacons; elders Joel De Jager and Mary Monsma and deacons Nathan Bos and Carol Van Ess-Dykema are completing their terms this month. We will formally install incoming council members at a January service. At the meeting we also recognized Stephen Mellis, who will be taking over church bookkeeper responsibilities from Jon Vander Vliet. Please join me in thanking everyone for their service: Joel, Mary, Nathan, Carol, and Jon for the job well done; Vi, Gary, Todd, Chelsea, and Stephen for their service anticipated; and David Campbell for his readiness to answer the call to service. I would encourage each you to thank them face-to-face in the coming weeks.

Planning for Pastor Meg’s 9-week sabbatical next summer has begun. The elders are in the process of determining interim coverage while she is away and will keep the congregation informed when a decision has been made.

Privacy Waiver: We recently updated and clarified the church’s privacy policy. While our default assumption is that we can use names and photos in internal communications, like the bulletin, we want to make sure you’re aware of all the options and have the opportunity to grant us permission to use your name and photo in the church’s public communications (like Facebook). A paper version of the updated waiver from is available in the narthex; you can also submit an electronic copy to Grace at grace.pool@dccrc.org. Grace will keep track of submitted forms – we’d love to have everyone in the congregational community submit one! If you have any questions about the church’s privacy policy, please contact Grace Pool or Amy Vander Vliet.

Bookkeeper Update: Jon Vander Vliet is stepping down as church bookkeeper, and Stephen Mellis has agreed to begin serving in this role. Since this transition will happen at the same time as the deacons welcome two new members, we thank you in advance for your patience as we get everyone trained and familiar with the church’s financial processes. Please contact the deacons at deacons@dccrc.org with any questions.

General Church Announcements

Advent in Narnia!  Our sanctuary configuration has changed for the season.  Our seating arrangement in the round is not conducive to use of our screens so for the season please find a hymnal or take a song sheet along with your bulletin!

A Christmas Card Shower! This is about Jaelyn Bos, a friend, acquaintance and member of DCCRC. Following her college years, she has joined the Peace Corps and is serving as a teacher of biology in middle school and high school. Her mom says she teaches 7 classes per day, with about 70 students in each class!! Wow! Mozambique is a long way from home and from her church family. We are inviting you to participate in a card shower. Please bring one signed card for Jaelyn and 1-2 extra cards for others to sign to church on Dec 3, 10 or 17. Her mom, Sara, will box them up and send them. This is the most efficient way to reach out to her this Christmas season. No, money and other gifts are not possible — just the cards. There will be a table set up with a box for cards that are Jaelyn-ready, and also for extra cards in case you forgot. Thank you! Creative handmade cards are also welcome!!

Adult Sunday school: No Sunday school on Dec. 24 and 31. On Jan. 7 and possibly 14, (student at the Univ. of Virginia) will be leading us in a discussion of Christian response to the white supremacy movement.

Book Group is reading In the Midst of Winter by Isabelle Allende for our next breakfast meeting, 9:30 a.m. Saturday, January 20 at Siyroush’s. All are welcome.

Newsletter Deadline: If you have something for the next edition of the church newsletter, please get it to Patrick Jasperse at pgjasperse@gmail.com no later than Friday, December 22.

DCCRC 75th Anniversary: In 2018 Washington, DC CRC is turning 75, and we need your help with the celebration! We’ve got lots of ideas for ways we can commemorate this occasion, so there will be many opportunities to get involved over the next year. Right now, we are looking for a few people to join a master planning team, which will develop the schedule for the year and coordinate with people from across the church to implement it. If you’re interested in joining the planning team, have an idea for an event or activity, or have any other questions, please contact team lead Amy Vander Vliet (abvandervliet/703-888-9509).
