Weekly News November 26-December 2, 2017

Congregational Meeting: The annual congregational meeting, in which the church selects new council members and approves the budget for 2018, will be held on Sunday, December 10. Professing members aged 14 years old and older are eligible to vote; everyone in the congregational community is welcome to attend. If you have questions about church membership, please contact Pastor Meg or Amy Vander Vliet.

Council Nominations This year we have 2 elder and 2 deacon spots to fill on Council.  We are grateful for all who considered serving in this capacity and for the following people who have let their nomination stand: For elder: Dave Campbell, Vi Diamond, Gary Mulder.  For deacon: Todd Helmus and Chelsea Thomas.  At our December 10congregational meeting, we will have a vote of affirmation for these candidates and will draw the names of two elders to serve.

The council would like to celebrate and recognize the Technology Team for replacing the righthand projector bulb and continuing to troubleshoot AV issues, particularly Joel De Jager, Jenifer De Jager, Eric Doornbos, Brian Roelofs, Dave Vander Hart, and Jon Vander Vliet. Congregation, please take the opportunity to thank God for their gifts of service – and thank them as well!

Privacy Waiver: We recently updated and clarified the church’s privacy policy. While our default assumption is that we can use names and photos in internal communications, like the bulletin, we want to make sure you’re aware of all the options and have the opportunity to grant us permission to use your name and photo in the church’s public communications (like Facebook). A paper version of the updated waiver from is available in the narthex; you can also submit an electronic copy to Grace at Grace will keep track of submitted forms – we’d love to have everyone in the congregational community submit one! If you have any questions about the church’s privacy policy, please contact Grace Pool or Amy Vander Vliet.

Church Bookkeeper: Jon Vander Vliet is stepping down as church bookkeeper, so the deacons are looking for an individual to serve in that role. The bookkeeper spends about an hour a week working with the treasurer (a deacon) and church administrator to pay bills and manage the church’s daily finances. For questions or additional details about the duties involved, contact Amy Vander Vliet (703-888-9509 or

General Church Announcements

We’re on the web! Are you on Facebook? So is the church! Our public page is, where you’ll see announcements of events and other major news (including schedule changes due to inclement weather). We’d love it if you liked our page! We also have a closed Facebook group (DC CRC) where members, visitors, alumni, and friends of DCCRC can share announcements, events, news, and generally useful (and occasionally silly!) information; see moderators Amy Vander Vliet, Katie Roelofs, Mike Pool, or Matt Vanderwerff to join. The church website is

Awaiting the King: Practicing Hope in an Age of Fear. How does our worship relate to our work? What does liturgy have to do with politics? How do we practice waiting in a world of injustice and heartbreak? In a workshop with Calvin College philosopher James K.A. Smith, we’ll explore how political life forms us in ways we might not realize—and how worship is “political” in ways we might not have considered. We’ll consider how the practices of the body of Christ are a way to practice hope and discernment. Join us for a unique way to enter the season of Advent! This will be held here in partnership with Silver Spring CRC on December 2, 9:30am-1pm, followed by lunch.

Adult Sunday school: For the month of December, class will on Dec. 3, 10 and 17, reading Chapters 7, 8 and 9 of The Good and Beautiful Life, (skipping discussion of chapters 5 & 6.) On Jan. 7 and possibly 14, Alicia De Jager (student at the Univ. of Virginia) will be leading us in a discussion of Christian response to the white supremacy movement.

First Sunday potluck will occur after church on December 3.  Lunch is potluck style, but there is always ample food, so come on down to the fellowship hall even if you are unable to bring a dish to share.  We’ll get started 10 minutes after the end of the worship service.

Pub Theology: Join us at for the next pub theology at Republic in Takoma Park on December 6 at 7:30 p.m.  While we’re imbibing our favorite beverages, we’ll be discussing the topic of food:  where does our food come from?  how do our food choices affect our own well-being and the earth’s?  what is the role of food in culture and relationships?

Saturday, Dec 9, 5:30-8:00 pm.  Please join us at church for our annual Christmas celebration!  All are invited to journey through our sanctuary Narnia adventure.  Supper is included!  We invite you to bring a dessert, if you choose.  Come early and stay late, or come and go as you please.  All are welcome, and sincerely encouraged to attend.   Please RSVP either through the email invitation, or with Sara Bos.
