Weekly News November 19 – 25, 2017

Church Bookkeeper: Jon Vander Vliet is stepping down as church bookkeeper, so the deacons are looking for an individual to serve in that role. The bookkeeper spends about an hour a week working with the treasurer (a deacon) and church administrator to pay bills and manage the church’s daily finances. For questions or additional details about the duties involved, contact Amy Vander Vliet (703-888-9509 or

Holiday Assistance for LaSalle-Backus Education Campus: One in eight LBEC students faces homelessness or housing instability, which can make it difficult to celebrate the upcoming holiday season. On November 23 (Thanksgiving Day) and November 26 the deacons will be collecting Walmart gift cards – to be distributed by LBEC’s social workers – to help provide students and their families with food and gifts. You can provide physical gift cards in multiples of $25; any designated cash/check contributions will go towards purchasing additional gift cards. If you have questions, contact Amy Vander Vliet.

Council: The council would like to celebrate and recognize everyone who planned and/or participated in the recent round of small group suppers. Congregation, please take the opportunity to thank God for their gifts of service – and thank them as well!

Council: The council would like to celebrate and recognize Lisa Telliga for her creativity in teaching the early elementary Sunday School class. Congregation, please take the opportunity to thank God for her gifts of service – and thank her as well!

Congregational Meeting: The annual congregational meeting, in which the church selects new council members and approves the budget for 2018, will be held on Sunday, December 10. Professing members aged 14 years old and older are eligible to vote; everyone in the congregational community is welcome to attend. If you have questions about church membership, please contact Pastor Meg or Amy Vander Vliet.

Thanks: I would like to thank all those who have visited, called, prayed, sent cards and flowers, played scrabble and said an encouraging word during my long road of surgery and recovery on my foot. I’m not 100% yet, but working hard to get there. Having a church family to comfort and uplift you in times of trial is one of God’s great gifts, from Evonne Ludema

We’re on the web! Are you on Facebook? So is the church! Our public page is, where you’ll see announcements of events and other major news (including schedule changes due to inclement weather). We’d love it if you liked our page! We also have a closed Facebook group (DC CRC) where members, visitors, alumni, and friends of DCCRC can share announcements, events, news, and generally useful (and occasionally silly!) information; see moderators Amy Vander Vliet, Katie Roelofs, Mike Pool, or Matt Vanderwerff to join. Thanksgiving Worship Join us at 11am on Thanksgiving Day to offer our thanksgiving and praise to God with Scripture and worship.  If you are interested in joining a group to walk or run the SOME (So Others Might Eat) 5K Turkey Trot downtown, please contact Pastor Meg (

Do you need somewhere to have Thanksgiving dinner?  We have several members of the congregation who have open seats at their tables.  We’d love to match you up!  Please let Sara Bos, or another member of the Hospitality Team know if you’re interested.

Awaiting the King: Practicing Hope in an Age of Fear. How does our worship relate to our work? What does liturgy have to do with politics? How do we practice waiting in a world of injustice and heartbreak? In a workshop with Calvin College philosopher James K.A. Smith, we’ll explore how political life forms us in ways we might not realize—and how worship is “political” in ways we might not have considered. We’ll consider how the practices of the body of Christ are a way to practice hope and discernment. Join us for a unique way to enter the season of Advent! This will be held here in partnership with Silver Spring CRC on December 2, in the morning, followed by lunch.

Saturday, Dec 9, 5:30-8:00 pm.  Please join us at church for our annual Christmas celebration!  All are invited to journey through our sanctuary Narnia adventure.  Supper is included!  We invite you to bring a dessert, if you choose.  Come early and stay late, or come and go as you please.  All are welcome, and sincerely encouraged to attend.   Please RSVP either through the email invitation, or with Sara Bos.
